What is a giclée ?
A giclée, (pronounced "zhee-clay") is a high resolution digital reproduction of uncompromising quality. This process is used by museums and fine art printers and is the highest quality reproduction method available today for both brilliant true color and sharp detail. The process takes an exceptionally high digital scan of the original image and reproduces it on paper or canvas using an advanced version of ink-jet printing, spraying more than 4 million droplets per second.
This image is printed with pigment based archival inks on 100% all rag archival paper.
Images printed on wood pulp based paper will yellow and deterioate, and dye based inks used in most home computers more easily fade. The giclée process itself is more expensive than other forms of reproduction but it is the next best thing to the original. This process produces an image that will not fade for an estimated 200 years if properly framed under glass and kept out of direct sunlight. This precaution applies to any original work of art.
A reproduction is not a fine art print. A fine print is an original work of art.
Fine Art Prints are most commonly seen as photography, intaglio (etching), relief (woodcuts, linoleum),
serigraphy (silk screen), and lithography. A reproduction is a copy of an original work of art.
However, the print industry often refers to reproductions as prints. It is important to know the difference.
